The guy I'm happiest for is Wade Phillips. He's taken a lot of grief over the past three years, and I have dished it out on him myself, but the fact is his coaching record is very good. And he just might be the nicest guy to every coach the Dallas Cowboys. Good for him last night. Hope he had himself a big Texas-sized beer. I know I did. - Alan
Today on Facebook, an Eagles fan - and a guy that I know and like - told me that he finds most Cowboys fans sickening. I started to get too jacked up, and I didn't want a piss-fest in a public forum like FB, especially attached to a photo of my son and I in our Cowboys clothes, so I took the post down.
But, for the record ...
Sickening, to me, is 60,000 Cro-Magnon idiots cheering because they thought a man might be paralyzed, which I saw first hand at that dump called The Vet in 1999. Dumbest fanbase in all of sports. No question. I would say most are as dumb as rocks, but I see no reason to insult rocks. I do, however, believe that if Charles Darwin attended an Eagles game, he would simply quip; "See, I told ya."
I don't know what it is with those people. Lombardi Trophy envy? Penis envy? (As in not having one). Feeling like second class scum because the city once felt compelled to bring a magistrate into the stadium so that people that were arrested during games could be fined on the spot? Who knows? Who cares? An Eagles fan who works in my office recently said "All Dallas Cowboys fans are assholes." I won't stoop to that level. Not all Eagle fans are assholes. I have some friends who are fans. But the cro-mags, who make up a big part of their fanbase, can go choke on one of those medicore over-rated cheesestakes that for some reason they feel is God's gift to man. Look people, it's a freaking minute-steak sandwich. It's not that big a deal.
Some idiot "flashed me" in the mini-mart last weekend. I had on my Dallas cap and shirt, and he opened his coat to reveal a "Dallas Sucks" shirt. This was an hour after Dallas kicked the shit out of them again. The thing is, why buy a shirt that places more emphasis on another team, rather than your own favorite team? It is an unhealthy obsession rooted, as I said before, in some type of fixation or odd envy. I can pretty much guarantee that nobody in the crowd of 92,000 last night in Texas was wearing an "Eagles Suck" shirt. There's just no market for such a shirt in Dallas. People simply wear their own team colors and worry about the Cowboys. It's a lot more fun, and much more healthy.

As for the Cowboys, love them or hate them, they are considered one of the most successful NFL teams of the modern era. They have won five Super Bowls and eight NFC championships. They have more victories on "Monday Night Football" than any other NFL team and hold NFL records for the most consecutive winning seasons (20, from 1966 to 1985) and most seasons with at least 10 wins (26). The team also holds a league record of 57 post-season games (winning 33 of them), and the most division titles with 21. They also have the most appearances in the NFC Championship Games (14), and the most Super Bowl appearances (8). Three Super Bowls were lost by a TOTAL of only 11 points. Even in defeat, they have always played well in the big, big games. The Cowboys also played in two NFL championship games before the NFL's 1970 merger with the American Football League. They were also the first team in NFL history to win three Super Bowls in just four years. They are listed as most valuable sports franchise in the United States. The fact is that since TV revenue and merchandise revenue are shared in the NFL - and since the Cowboys have the highest ratings and sell the most merchandise - the NFL and all of its owners love the Cowboys and Jerry Jones because the Cowboys simply help make more money for everybody than any other team. That's a fact. The Cowboys, in the NFL, really help pay the bills.
(This info has been posted here before on this Cowboys blog, which I update every week. I am not on any "bandwagon." Still wore my colors in '89 when they were 1-15 and the worst team in the NFL. And I wore them in 1995 when I stood on the field at Texas Stadium and laid down right inside the big blue star on the 50-yard line. That year, they won the Super Bowl.
Remember that game against Pittsburgh? Larry Allen hit Greg Lloyd so hard on the Cowboys very first possession of the game that his body has still not ever been found. It is still one of my all-time favorite moments in sports.
No "bandwagon" here. I have followed the star since '74. So have many of my friends.
Some people hate the term "America's Team." Well, I live in Pennsylvania, and I personally know more Cowboys fans than Eagles and Steelers fans combined. Cowboy flags line the streets everywhere on Sunday, including my street, and it should be known that the Cowboys didn't name themselves "America's Team." It was pinned on them, in 1979, by NFL Films, because they noticed that wherever the team traveled, they had a ridiculous number of fans in the stands, all across America. Nobody really cares about the nickname that much much. If some other team wants it, they can have it. But it is statistically accurate based on merch sales.
I could go on, but I'll stop for now. Must say though, that having the Yankees beat Philadelphia in the World Series and the Cowboys beat Philadelphia three times in one season is well ...
